Space Juggling will probably make the most sense if you watch the videos in this section in the order they are presented. You might also choose to watch this YouTube Playlist, where they are shown in order: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLKhOZ0nVFPlFm799hQMJv9ynBo3vsMxf3
Space Juggling
3 balls
When learning to juggle in weightlessness, the first thing to understand is that the balls will move in straight lines. They will not move in parabolas like we're all used to.

3 ball Shower
In weightlessness, it is possible to spin your body in a cartwheel. I love this because it is the only way you can spin and continue facing in the same direction.
Since balls can travel in straight lines, I wondered if it would be possible to throw balls down to myself while spinning this way. It is! The challenge is throwing the balls at just the right speed for them to arrive in the same location as your hand as you spin.

3 ball Spinning
Remember that in weightlessness thrown balls travel in straight lines? While I am spinning, I do not see straight lines. I see curves.
In my rotating reference frame, we can see these paths together and enjoy a spinning universe.
When I discovered that these curves are manipulations on Archimedean Spirals, the strangeness of the reality I had stumbled upon revealed itself just a little bit more. (I’ll be sharing future posts about the mathematics of Archimedean Spirals and Space Juggling.)

Space Juggling
4 balls parallel
As I’ve explored the possible patterns within the Space Juggling framework, I discovered that when you throw the balls parallel to each other (in the non-rotating frame), they make a really beautiful pattern in the rotating frame.
Do you notice how the ball near the juggler’s face seems to come to a stop after the throw, stop, then change directions? While the other ball makes a large loop? These balls are actually moving parallel to each other but the distortions of the Coriolis and centrifugal forces are causing them to make very different shapes.

Tech Tree
This is the Space Juggling “tech tree” for throws in the rotating frame when each hand is kept on the opposite side of the spine.
“Leading Hand” means the hand that is in front of the spine in the plane of rotation. “Lagging Hand” means the hand that is behind the spine in the plane of rotation.

One of the best parts of not actually filming Space Juggling in space, was that I had the time and freedom to experiment, learn, reflect, and apply what I had learned.
